A perennial grass of the grass family (illustration) that grows in clusters in wetlands and ditches in suburban areas. The Japanese name, wakasasa, is said to come from its small leaves. The stem is thin and somewhat stiff, spreading at the base to become an underground stem, with roots coming out from the nodes, and the upper part rising up and branching sparsely, reaching a height of 30-50 cm. The leaves are lanceolate or short linear, 4-7 cm long, about 6 mm wide, somewhat stiff, pointed at the tip, and hairless. From June to August, sparse panicles 3-6 cm long are produced at the top of the stem. The branches of the inflorescence are thin, dividing several times to produce small branches, and small spikelets are produced in a star-like pattern.
