Trees normally grow one annual ring each year, with the growth sparse and dense with the change in spring and autumn, but sometimes an extra ring may appear in a year due to extreme weather, insect damage, wind damage, etc. These are called false rings, and can be distinguished from false rings because the transition from coarse to dense tissue is not very clear from an anatomical point of view.
