Photocoagulation - Hikari Gyoko (English name) photocoagulation

Japanese: 光凝固 - ひかりぎょうこ（英語表記）photocoagulation

A method of coagulating the affected tissue by concentrating a strong beam of light and generating thermal energy. When it was first developed in 1946, it used sunlight, but in recent years, high-pressure xenon lamps and laser light have been used. It was originally used to block holes in retinal detachment, but is now also used to treat diabetic retinopathy, central chorioretinitis, and retinopathy of prematurity.

強い光線を集光させて，そこに発生する熱エネルギーにより，患部の組織を凝固させる方法。 1946年に開発された当初は太陽光を用いていたが，近年は，キセノン高圧ランプとかレーザー光が用いられている。最初は網膜剥離の裂孔閉塞に用いられたが，現在では，糖尿病性網膜症，中心性網脈絡膜炎，未熟児網膜症の治療などにも用いられている。
