This was the name of a post station on the Tosando road in the Middle Ages, which is now Oaza Kagami in Ryuo-cho, Gamo-gun, Shiga Prefecture. It appeared during the Genpei Civil War, and is mentioned in the Azuma Kagami, Genpei Seisuiki, and Taiheiki as a key transportation point. It is said to be the place where Minamoto no Yoshitsune came of age on his way to seek refuge with the Fujiwara clan of Oshu, and is known for its Genbuku Pond and Eboshikake Pine. Minamoto no Yoritomo also stayed here when he went to Kyoto to attend the consecration ceremony for the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple in March 1195 (Kenkyu 6), and in March 1252 (Kencho 4), it was also the lodging place for Prince Munetaka when he went down to Kamakura as shogun.
