The capital of Moldova. It is located about 160 km west-northwest of Odessa, Ukraine, along the Buik River, a tributary of the Donestor River. It has been known since the 15th century, and was a commercial center during the Turkish period from the 16th century onwards. In 1812 it became part of Russia. After World War I it became part of Romania, and in 1940 it became part of the Soviet Union, becoming the capital of the newly established Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, and in 1991 the capital of independent Moldova. Its main industry is the processing of agricultural products produced in the Moldovan Plain. It produces wine, brandy, flour, canned fruit, tobacco, meat, dairy products, etc. In addition to leather and sewing, machinery (tractors, pumps, refrigerators, washing machines) and wood processing industries have also developed. The surrounding area is surrounded by hills of orchards of grapes, plums, etc. The city was heavily damaged during World War II, but was rebuilt after the war, greening has progressed, and some old buildings remain. It is also a cultural center, with the Academy of Sciences, the University of Moldova (1945), medical, agricultural, and educational universities, the Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, a music conservatory, and a national opera and ballet theater. The city is connected by air to Moscow, the capital of Russia, Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, and Bucharest, the capital of Romania, via the international railway line between Odessa and Iasi (Romania). モルドバの首都。ウクライナのオデッサの西北西約 160km,ドネストル川支流ブイク川に沿う。 15世紀より知られ,16世紀以降のトルコ領時代には商業中心地であった。 1812年ロシア領。第1次世界大戦後ルーマニア領,1940年ソビエト連邦領に入り,新たに成立したモルダビア=ソビエト社会主義共和国の首都,1991年独立したモルドバの首都となった。産業はモルドバ平原で生産される農産物の加工が中心。ワイン,ブランデー,小麦粉,果実缶詰,たばこ,食肉,酪農製品などを生産。皮革,縫製などのほか,機械 (トラクタ,ポンプ,冷蔵庫,洗濯機) ,木材加工などの工業も発展。周辺は,ブドウ,スモモなどの果樹畑の丘で囲まれる。市街は第2次世界大戦で大きな被害を受けたが,戦後再建され,緑化も進み,一部に古い建築物も残っている。科学アカデミー,モルドバ大学 (1945) をはじめ医学,農学,教育などの大学,ブドウ栽培・ワイン醸造研究所,音楽院,民族オペラ・バレエ劇場などがあり,文化の中心地でもある。オデッサ-ヤシ (ルーマニア) 間の国際鉄道に沿い,ロシアの首都モスクワ,ウクライナの首都キエフ,ルーマニアの首都ブカレストなどと空路で結ばれる。人口 63万2100(2011)。
