...They were intellectual elites who had mastered Islamic studies and Persian literature and art, and took pride in being Ottoman gentlemen (Osmanlı). On the other hand, the majority of children conscripted by the Deşirme became Janissaries or sipah (royal guard cavalry), and the former in particular had a deep connection with the mystical sect Bektash since its founding, and gained a great political voice through the practice of expressing dissatisfaction with the Sultan by bringing a large cooking pot to the Meat Square (Et Meydanı) in front of the barracks. Maintaining public order in Istanbul was also one of the main tasks of this corps.
