Vostochno-Sibirskoe more; East Siberian Sea
It is one of the marginal seas of the Arctic Ocean. It is an area bounded by the Siberian coast to the south, the Novosibirsk Islands to the west, and Wrangel Island to the east. It is connected to the Laptev Sea in the west and the Chukchi Sea in the east. It stretches about 1,200 km from east to west, has an area of about 940,000 km2, and has a continental shelf 700 km wide. The average depth in the north is 45 m, but it is deeper in the east. The Indigirka River and the Kolyma River flow into it, and in summer the waterways along the south coast are navigable. The main port is Ambalchik at the mouth of the Kolyma River. This was the last difficult spot during the development of the Northeast Passage, and the first completed voyage was made in 1878 by N. Norenscher's Vega.
