Kalmar - Kalmar (English spelling)

Japanese: カルマル - かるまる(英語表記)Kalmar
Kalmar - Kalmar (English spelling)

A port city in the Småland region in southeastern Sweden. Population 59,787 (2001). With the island of Jjøland to the east and a good harbor on the Baltic Sea, it serves as an import/export and fishing port. Shipbuilding, automobile and machinery industries have developed. In 1397, the Kalmar Union was formed linking the three Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but in the 16th century a fortress called the "Key of Sweden" was built in preparation for a Danish attack on Sweden's independence movement. After falling into decline after being burned by Denmark in the first half of the 17th century, a castle was built at the current location, and the city developed into an industrial city in the 20th century.
