A state in the north-central United States. Abbreviated as Wis. or WI. Located west of the Great Lakes, it has many hills. The cool summers make it suitable for growing pasture grass. Many immigrants from Switzerland and the Netherlands spread knowledge of dairy farming, and it became the number one dairy state in the United States. It is still known as a major cheese producer. Beer production, brought by German immigrants, is also thriving. Machinery manufacturing is also carried out, centered around the largest city, Milwaukee, and forestry is also thriving. With many lakes, it is also a tourist destination. Colonized by the French in the late 17th century, it became a U.S. territory in 1783 and joined the Union in 1848.
