Pierce, John Robinson
Born: March 27, 1910, Des Moines
[Died] April 2, 2002, California American engineer and information and communications scientist. Father of communications satellites. Joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1936. Served in various positions, including Director of Electronics Research. In 1971 he became a professor at California Institute of Technology, and in 1979 became Chief Engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. During World War II, he developed a low-voltage transmitter that is now widely used as a radar receiver. After the war, he worked on theoretical research for the development of communications satellites, and published many papers outlining the necessity of satellite communications technology. He persuaded the NASA to equip a radio wave reflector on a satellite launched in August 1960, which led to successful communications experiments between two bases on Earth, and also greatly inspired the development of the first private satellite, Telstar. He was awarded the Japan Prize in 1985.
