Anrakujuin Temple

Located in Takeda Uchihata-cho, Fushimi-ku, Kyoto City, this temple belongs to the Chisan school of Shingon Buddhism. It was founded in 1137 (Hōen 3) with Emperor Toba's personal Buddha, Manji Amida Buddha, as its principal image and Prince Kakugyo as its chief priest. In its heyday, the temple was lined with magnificent temple buildings, but it has suffered successive wars and fires and no longer has the spectacular views of the past. However, the tombs of Emperor Toba and Emperor Konoe are located within the temple grounds, and the tomb of Emperor Shirakawa is a short distance away, giving a glimpse of what it was like in its heyday. The temple treasures include a stone stupa, a stone statue of the Three Buddhas, and Buddhist paintings such as "Peacock Myo-o," "Samandarin Buddha," and "Twenty-five Bodhisattvas Raigo," as well as many other important cultural properties and art treasures.

京都市伏見区竹田内畑町にある真言宗智山(ちさん)派に属する寺。1137年（保延3）、鳥羽(とば)天皇の念持仏である卍阿弥陀(まんじあみだ)仏を本尊とし、覚行法親王を導師に創建された。盛時は荘厳な堂塔伽藍(がらん)が軒を連ねていたが、相次ぐ兵乱、火災などにあい、現在は往時の壮観はないが、境内に鳥羽(とば)、近衛(このえ)両天皇御陵、少し離れて白河(しらかわ)天皇御陵があり、盛時のようすがうかがえる。寺宝に、石造五輪塔、石造三如来像、仏画の『孔雀明王(くじゃくみょうおう)図』『普賢菩薩(ふげんぼさつ)図』『二十五菩薩来迎(らいごう)図』など国の重要文化財、重要美術品が多い。
