Creak - creak
〘Self-Ma 5 (4)〙 When things rub against each other, they do not move smoothly but make a creaking sound. Creak. ※Noin's Makura (end of the 10th century) 25 "Stones are trapped in the ink and creak with a creaking sound." ※Haiku, Osaka Dokuginshu (1675) Vol. 2 "The sound of the oil shop's wooden plaque is like a guidepost, The bright door creaks quietly (Migaku)" [Etymology] (1) The verb form of "kishi" from the onomatopoeia "kishikishi." "Kishimeku" and "kishiru" are also used in the same sense.
(2) From the Middle Ages onwards, the words "gisimu" and "gishimeku" were created with a voiced initial consonant. These words not only described the sound made by objects rubbing against each other, but also expanded their meaning to include "to strain," "to fight," or "to compete" in order to oppose an opponent.

Kishiro/ Ukishirofu [Grinding]

〘Self-Ha 4〙① To compete by clashing with force or strength. To compete. ※Utsubo (c. 970-999) Kuniyori no Shita "He did not want to be disgraced by others and end up in trouble." ※Genji (c. 1001-14) Eawase "He served his daughter in a disguised disguise." ② To be crowded together, as if to collide with each other. Also, to hit an obstacle and have one's progress impeded. [Meigoki (1275)] ※Genjinshu (1406) 4 "Tezawo means when a boat is disguised, it is used to hold up a sword from both sides."

Creak [squeak]

〘 noun 〙 (the noun derived from the conjunctive form of the verb "kisiku (squeak)") 1. To make a creaking sound. ※Sled (1927)〈Kuroshima Denji〉 4 "The creaking of the slide and the sound of hooves kicking the frozen snow could only be heard outside." 2. To fight. Also, to be brooding over one thing or another. Disharmony. Discord. "Friction arose between the two." ※Ukiyo-zoshi Oniichi Hogan Toranomaki (1733) 4 "The creaking of the means by which we were trying to kill you was the first to occur."

(adjectival form of the verb "kishiro (kishiro)") To be quarrelsome. To be prone to quarrels. To be competitive. ※Sagomo Monogatari (c. 1069-77) vol. 2 "After the Empress visited the palace, <omitted> the situation was so out of the ordinary that it was like kishiro was acting like a child."

Kishiroikishirohi [Grinding]

〘Noun〙 (Noun derived from the conjunctive form of the verb "kishiro (kishiro)") A stalemate. A fight. A clash of words. Usually used in the form "Kuruma kishiroi." ※Eika (around 1028-92) Hatsuhana "My wife's kishiroi car is also a thing."

(2)中世以降には、語頭の濁音化した「ぎしむ」「ぎしめく」が生じたが、これらは、物がこすれることによって生じる音を表わすとともに、相手に対抗するために「力む」「争う」「競い合う」の意味に拡大していった。

きしろ・う きしろふ【軋】

〘自ハ四〙① 勢いや力をぶつけ合うように争う。競争する。※宇津保(970‐999頃)国譲下「人にきしろひていたづらにならんと思給へず」※源氏(1001‐14頃)絵合「御むすめに、きしろふさまにてさぶらひ給ふを」② ぶつかり合うように、こみ合う。ひしめく。また、障害物にぶつかって進行が妨げられる。〔名語記(1275)〕※言塵集(1406)四「手ざをとは 舟のきしろふ時両方よりさをさしはる也」

きしみ【軋】

〘名〙 (動詞「きしむ(軋)」の連用形の名詞化)① きしきしと音をたてること。※橇(1927)〈黒島伝治〉四「滑桁(すべりけた)のきしみと、凍った雪を蹴る蹄の音がそとにひびくばかりであった」② 争うこと。また、あれこれと思いめぐらすこと。不調和。不和。「二人の間に軋が生じる」※浮世草子・鬼一法眼虎の巻(1733)四「最前そちを討たんとせし手段のきしみに」

きしり【軋】

〘名〙① 物がすれあって音をたてること。きしること。また、その音。※俳諧・洗朱(1698)「工みなし五十歳の門の戸の輾」② 人と人との間がうまくゆかないで、争いなどが生じること。軋轢(あつれき)。不和。※二人女房(1891‐92)〈尾崎紅葉〉上「此天産物の脂が両性の間を和げて、軋轢(キシリ)を遏(と)めること請合の妙薬に出来て」

きしろわし きしろはし【軋】

〘形シク〙 (動詞「きしろう(軋)」の形容詞化) きしろうようである。争いがちである。競争がましい。※狭衣物語(1069‐77頃か)二「中宮参らせ給て後は、〈略〉あるにもあらぬ御有様を、きしろはしう」

きしろい きしろひ【軋】

〘名〙 (動詞「きしろう(軋)」の連用形の名詞化) きしろうこと。争うこと。きそいあうこと。きしり。ふつう「車きしろい」の形で用いられる。※栄花(1028‐92頃)初花「女房の車きしろいもありけれど」
