Hampton Court

This former British royal palace is located on the banks of the Thames in the southwestern suburbs of London. Cardinal Wolsey built his own house (construction began around 1515) and presented it to King Henry VIII in 1526. In the 1930s, the king added a north and south wing on the west front, a great hall with a magnificent hammer-beam ceiling, and a chapel. During the reign of James I (1603-25), the Hampton Court Conference, which decided to publish the King James Version of the Bible, was held here. During the Puritan Revolution, Charles I was briefly imprisoned here, and during the Republican period, it was also the home of O. Cromwell.

ロンドン南西郊，テムズ河畔にある旧イギリス王室宮殿。枢機卿ウルジーが建てた自邸(1515ころ起工)を，1526年国王ヘンリー8世に献上。30年代に王は西正面の南北翼屋，華麗なハンマー･ビーム天井をもつ大ホール，礼拝堂などを増築した。ジェームズ1世時代(1603‐25)，《欽定訳聖書》の刊行を決定したハンプトン･コート会議がここで開催された。また，ピューリタン革命期にはチャールズ1世が一時ここに監禁され，共和政期にはO.クロムウェルの住いになったこともある。
