〘Noun〙① Six types of style in the Book of Songs. A general term for the categories of style, elegance, and ode, which are classified in terms of content, and fu, hi, and kyo, which are classified in terms of expression. Also, by extension, the various forms of ancient Chinese poetry. Also refers to the essence of poetry, or the ideal that should be pursued in poetry. ※Honcho Bunsui (c. 1060) 9: Preface to the Poetry of the Enden Kenshi〈Sugawara Bunto〉 "Please divide _twenty- one verses _{into one} ancient volume, and copy _twenty -six meanings into _ten new ones." 〔Great Preface to the Book of Songs〕② Six types of style in waka poetry. A general term for accompanying verse, counting verse, accompanying song verse, parable verse, ordinary verse, and common verse. In the Kokinshu, the six meanings of the Book of Songs mentioned in ① are applied to waka poetry.
