Curitiba (English spelling)
The capital of the state of Paraná in southern Brazil. It is located about 320 km southwest of São Paulo, in the plateau of the Sierra de Mar mountain range, at an altitude of about 900 m. It was founded in 1654 as a mining center for gold ores, but the gold mine itself was poor. After it became the state capital in 1854, many Italians, Germans, and Poles settled there, and in the 20th century, Syrians and Japanese immigrants also came in large numbers, and the population gradually increased, and the economy developed rapidly after 1940. It is now a modern city with industries such as paper, furniture, textiles, automobiles, cement, matches, tobacco, metals, and pharmaceuticals, and is also active in the distribution and processing of mate tea (Paraguayan tea), lumber, and beef cattle. The city has a civic center consisting of a group of magnificent buildings, a cathedral (1894) modeled after Barcelona Cathedral in Spain, the Federal University of Paraná (1912), and the Catholic University of Paraná (59). It is connected to São Paulo by highways and rail, and also to the Atlantic coast ports of Paranaguá and Antonina. Population: 1,291,142 (1991 estimate).
