Hamburger steak, or simply hamburger, is a type of meat dish that first appeared in America around 1884. It is made by mixing minced beef with seasonings and grilling it like a steak. It can also be made by mincing beef, veal, or pork together, or by adding chopped onion and binding it with breadcrumbs or egg. There is no consensus on the origin of the name, but it is said to have been named after its similarity to steak tartare, a specialty of Hamburg, Germany. This steak sandwiched between a round bun is also called a hamburger, and around 1930, chains of hamburger stands were established, and it became a typical American snack along with the hot dog.

ハンバーガー･ステーキ，あるいはたんにハンバーガーともいう。1884年ごろアメリカに出現した肉料理の一種。ミンチ状の牛肉に調味料を加えてまとめ，ステーキ風に焼いたもの。牛，子牛，豚の肉を合いびきにしたり，タマネギのみじん切りを加えてパン粉や卵でつなぐこともある。名称の由来については定説はないが，ドイツのハンブルクの名物だったタルタル･ステーキの系統をひくところから名づけられたといわれる。このステーキを丸いパンにはさんだものもハンバーガーと呼ばれ，1930年前後にはハンバーガー･スタンドのチェーン店ができてホットドッグと並ぶアメリカの代表的な軽食となった。
