They are said to have acted as judges in musical contests between Apollo and the satyr flute expert Marsyas, and to have defeated the Thracian musician Thamyris, who challenged them to a contest, thereby depriving him of his eyesight and musical ability, but they have few myths of their own. The center of their worship was Mount Helikon in Pieria and Boeotia, where the spring of the nymph Aganippē on Mount Helikon and the spring of Hippocrene, said to have gushed forth from the strike of the winged horse Pegasus' hoof, were famous as springs of poets.
