A type of free-reed aerophone. It was invented in the 1840s by Heinrich Band (1821-60) of Krefeld, Germany, based on the accordion. Button-type keys are attached to both ends of the square bellows, and the left hand side is low-pitched and can play single notes, while the right hand side is high-pitched and can also play chords. A lever for opening and closing the air valve is attached to the right thumb. It has a range of three octaves and a deeper tone than the accordion. It was brought to Argentina in the late 19th century and became the main instrument in tango ensembles. It excels at expressing sharp staccatos, and is an instrument that accentuates the rhythm of tango.
