Chimera - Kimaira (English spelling)

A monster from Greek mythology. It is said to be the child of a Hydra (water snake) or Echidna (snake woman), and according to Homer it had the head of a lion, the body of a she-goat (called chimera in Greek), and the hindquarters of a dragon. According to Hesiod, it was a three-headed monster with a lion, a she-goat, and a dragon-snake. It breathed fire from its mouth and tormented the people and livestock of Lycia, but was defeated by the hero Bellerophon. Today in biology, a living organism that combines tissues of different genetic types is called a "chimera," and this name was derived from this monster.

ギリシア神話の怪物。ヒドラ（水蛇）あるいはエキドナ（蛇女）の子とされ、ホメロスによれば頭部は獅子(しし)、胴体は牝山羊(めやぎ)（ギリシア語でキマイラ）、後部は竜、またヘシオドスによれば、獅子と牝山羊と竜蛇の三つの頭をもつ合成怪獣とされる。口から火を吐いてはリキアの人畜を苦しめていたが、英雄ベレロフォンに退治された。今日生物学で、遺伝子型の異なる組織が合体した生物体のことを「キメラ」とよぶが、これはこの怪物にちなんだ命名である。
