Formica yessensis

Japanese: エゾアカヤマアリ(英語表記)Formica yessensis
Formica yessensis
An insect of the Formicidae family of the Hymenoptera order (illustration). Worker ants are 5-8 mm long and mostly yellow-red except for their dark brown abdomen. They inhabit the mountains from Hokkaido to central Honshu, and are also distributed in eastern Siberia, northeastern China, and the Korean Peninsula. In central Honshu, they live in larch forests at altitudes of about 1,400-1,800 m. They build their nests underground, but on top of that they pile up small pieces of dead plants to build cone-shaped mounds about 50 cm high, in which they raise their larvae in the summer. Usually, one family lives in one mound, but sometimes they move freely between several mounds, making the whole family look like one. This is called a super colony.
