Meaning elder in Spanish. Refers to the indigenous elite under colonial rule in the Philippines. Originally they were the leaders of the barangay, but under Spanish rule they were reorganized, and village heads retired to become elders, from among whom the town mayor (gobernadorcillo) was chosen. Thus, although they were indigenous, they were at the very bottom of the colonial administrative structure, and their power was limited by the Spanish district priests.
