...They are considered to be the residence of the deceased's spirit, and are placed in the Buddhist altar and are the subject of memorial services during Bon, Higan, the anniversary of the death, or in the morning and evening. Generally, two temporary tablets are made at the time of the funeral, written in ink on plain wood; one is taken to the cemetery and the other is placed in the Buddhist altar at home, and then replaced with the main tablet, which is lacquered or gold leafed, on the 49th day after the death or one to three years after the death. Buddhist ihai are equivalent to Confucian priests and Shinto spirit substitutes. ...
