Hang Tuah (English spelling)

Japanese: ハントゥア（英語表記）Hang Tuah

The most popular national hero in history among the Malays. He served Sultan Mansur Shah (reigned 1459-77), who built the golden age of the Malacca Sultanate. His birth and death years are unknown. He is described in detail in the history of the Malacca Sultanate, the Sujala Melayu, and the biography, the Hikayat Hangtuah (c. 17th century). In addition to his many military feats on the battlefield and his spectacular adventures as an envoy of the Sultan to Constantinople (now Istanbul), it was his loyalty to his master, the Sultan, that made him a hero.
