A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is widely distributed in the warm temperate and subtropical zones of southeastern Asia, and is commonly seen along roadsides in mountains and fields throughout Japan, except Hokkaido. Many thin stems emerge from the roots, creeping above ground at the base, then rise upright to a height of 10-30 cm. The leaves are ovate, 1-3 cm long, with sawtooth edges, and grow opposite each other. In summer, the plant produces an inflorescence at the end of the stem, with small, pale pink, lip-shaped flowers arranged in whorls in several tiers. It has four stamens, two of which are long. The Japanese name comes from the shape of the inflorescence. Other plants in the same genus include Kurumabana (car flower), Yamatoubana, and Inutoubana.
