In 1954, the town of Minoshima and the three villages of Yasuda, Miyahara, and Itoga were merged to form the town of Arita, and in 1956, it was incorporated as a city. In 1962, Hatsushima was incorporated. The population is 34,283 (1995). The town is centered around Minoshima and Kitaminato, which were the shipping ports at the mouth of the river. In the Middle Ages, it was the home base of the Yuasa clan, which had influence in Arida County, and the remains of Myoe, a descendant of the clan, remain. Since the early modern period, mandarin oranges have been cultivated in the mountainous areas to the north and south of the Arida River basin.
