A freshwater coelenterate (cnidaria) belonging to the family Anemonidae of the class Hydrozoa (illustration) (illustration). It is distributed in temperate zones such as Europe, North America, and China, and was first discovered in Japan in 1928 in an aquarium at a laboratory at the University of Tokyo. No further reports were released after that, but since 1946 it has been frequently found in ponds and water tanks in various locations from Hokkaido to Kyushu between August and October. The cap is hemispherical and up to 2 cm in diameter, and is colorless and transparent. The edge of the cap has 100 to 200 tentacles of various lengths, depending on the stage of growth.
