The largest counter-revolutionary peasant revolt during the French Revolution took place in the Vendée region in the west. There is no definitive theory as to why such a large-scale counter-revolutionary revolt occurred, but it is believed that the background to this revolt was the region's isolated and backward nature, which made transportation difficult, as well as the particularly strong ties between the poor peasants and the feudal lords and the Catholic Church. The clergy in particular did not submit to the revolution, and even before the revolt, there were many clergy who refused to take the oath in order to comply with the Fundamental Law of the Clergy.
