Durango (English spelling)
Its official name is Victoria de Durango. It is the capital of Durango State in north-central Mexico. It is located in a fertile valley at an altitude of about 1,900m in the middle of the Madre del Occidental mountain range, about 400km north-northwest of Guadalajara. It was settled in 1556, but the town was founded in 1563. During the Spanish colonial period, it developed as the capital of Nueva Vizcaya State, which consisted of the area including the present states of Durango and Chihuahua. It has long been known as a resort town due to the hot springs that flow nearby, but it is now also an important center of commerce, industry, and mining. In particular, the near-pure hematite deposits on Cerro Mercado (about 210m above sea level) to the north of the city are the world's largest, and there is a steelworks in the city. Other industries include cotton textiles, wool textiles, glass, flour milling, tobacco, and sugar refining. It is also the home of Juarez State University of Durango (1933). It is a key transportation location with four railways and roads, and has a population of 414,015 (estimated in 1990).
