An insect of the Hemiptera family, Cicadaidae (illustration). It is the largest cicada in Japan, with a sturdy, black, shiny body. Its Japanese name was given to it because of these characteristics. It is commonly found in Japan from the Kanto region to the Ryukyu Islands. Its body length is 45-50 mm, and its forewings span 120-130 mm. Its body is black and shiny, and some have a white band on its ventral and dorsal side. The anterior vein of the forewing is yellowish-green at the base, and the abdominal valve of males is oval and uniformly orange. There are geographical variations in the size of the white part of the ventral and dorsal side, and some are thick and span two segments, while others have white sides on the entire ventral and dorsal side. They are classified as separate subspecies, Ryukyu kumazemi C. f . okinawana and Yonakuni kumazemi C. f . yonakunina , respectively. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
