An Indian lute-like plucked instrument. Also known as tanpura. An instrument used for drones (sustained sounds), which are essential to Indian music. Usually, the four metal strings are tuned in 1sts and 5ths, and played continuously with the fingers. Strings are clamped at the bridge, creating a unique, rich, reverberating sound. It is an instrument used in both the north and south, but there are differences in size and material, and the tanpura in the south has a more subdued tone than the north. Today, it is sometimes substituted by the harmonium or shruti box, which are easy to carry around. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
