An Indian lute-like plucked instrument. Also known as tanpura. An instrument used for drones (sustained sounds), which are essential to Indian music. Usually, the four metal strings are tuned in 1sts and 5ths, and played continuously with the fingers. Strings are clamped at the bridge, creating a unique, rich, reverberating sound. It is an instrument used in both the north and south, but there are differences in size and material, and the tanpura in the south has a more subdued tone than the north. Today, it is sometimes substituted by the harmonium or shruti box, which are easy to carry around.

インドのリュート属撥弦楽器。タンプーラとも。インド音楽に不可欠なドローン（持続音）用の楽器。通常金属弦４本を１度と５度に調弦し，指でとぎれることなく鳴らし続ける。駒のところに糸をはさみ，余韻豊かな独特の響きを作る。南北共通して用いられる楽器であるが，大きさ，材質などに違いがあり，南のタンブーラは北に比べて音色が地味。今日では持運びに便利なハルモニウムやシュルティ・ボックスで代用されることもある。
