...A mountain in the northwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. It straddles the cities of Arao and Tamana and the town of Nankan. The mountain is divided into two peaks, Tsutsugatake (501m) and Kannondake (473m), made of granite. On the western foot of the mountain, on the hills of the Paleogene layer with coal-bearing layers, there are remains of kilns and ironworks from ancient and medieval times. Tsutsugatake in the north was where the medieval land lord Ojiro of Nohara Manor built his mountain castle, and the mountain's name is derived from this. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Kannon-dake" is listed below.
