Meconium - Taiben (English spelling)

This refers to the dark green stool that a newborn baby first excretes within the first 1 or 2 days after birth. After the third day, it changes into what is called yellow transitional stool. If the excretion of meconium is delayed for more than 24 hours, intestinal disease is suspected. Also, because meconium contains a lot of bilirubin, delayed excretion is one of the causes of jaundice. If the amniotic fluid becomes cloudy with meconium during delivery, it means that the baby is in pain and has excreted stool inside the uterus, indicating the baby's poor condition.

The reason why meconium is called "kani baba" or "kanikuso" comes from the story of the crab guardian. According to the Kogoshui, when Toyotamahime gave birth to a prince in a birthing hut on the seashore, her attendant Ame no Oshihito made a broom and swept away the crabs, which led to him being in charge of cleaning, and the surnames Crab Guardian and Sweeping Guardian were born, which later became Kamon. From this story, words using the word crab to refer to childbirth and newborn babies were created.

新生児が出生後1、2日の間に初めて排泄(はいせつ)する暗緑色の便をいう。3日目以後には黄色の移行便とよばれるものに変わっていく。胎便の排泄が24時間以上遅れると、腸の疾患が疑われる。また、胎便はビリルビンを多く含むため、その排泄の遅延が黄疸(おうだん)の原因の一つともなっている。分娩(ぶんべん)時に羊水が胎便で混濁した場合は、児が苦しくて便を子宮体内で排泄したことを意味し、児の悪い状態を示すものである。

　なお、胎便のことを「かにばば」とか蟹屎(かにくそ)とよぶのは、蟹守(かにもり)の故事による。『古語拾遺(こごしゅうい)』によれば、豊玉姫(とよたまひめ)が海浜の産屋(うぶや)で皇子を出産したとき、供の天忍人(あめのおしひと)が箒(ほうき)をつくって蟹を掃いたことから掃除などをつかさどるようになり、蟹守とか掃守(かにもり)の姓ができ、のちに掃部(かもん)となったという。この故事から、出産や産児に蟹を付してよぶ語がつくられた。
