Middle Atmosphere Program

Japanese: 中層大気研究計画 - ちゅうそうたいきけんきゅうけいかく（英語表記）Middle Atmosphere Program

Commonly known as MAP, this is an international cooperative project that aims to clarify the movement, composition, radiation, and other conditions of the middle atmosphere (the layer of air 10-120 km above the ground) on a global scale. This project was launched as a four-year plan (1982-85) proposed by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) as part of Earth's atmospheric research. The middle atmosphere was an area that was very slow to be understood due to the lack of suitable observation methods, but the remarkable development of remote sensing technology in recent years has opened the way for observational research into this unknown area.

通称MAP（マツプ）。全地球規模にわたって中層大気(地上10～120kmの気層)の運動，組成，放射などの状態を明らかにしようとする国際協力事業。本計画は，地球大気研究の一環として国際学術連合会議(ICSU)が提案した四ヵ年計画(1982‐85)として発足した。中層大気は，従来適当な観測法がなかったため，理解が非常に遅れていた領域であったが，近年のリモートセンシング技術の著しい発展に支えられてこの未知の領域に観測研究の道が開かれた。
