1912‐49 Lebanese politician. Born the son of a Greek Orthodox doctor. Moved to Brazil in 1921 and returned to Lebanon in 1930. Taught German at the American University of Beirut. In 1932, he founded the Syrian Nationalist Party (PPS), which advocated the principle of Syrianism based on a historical Syria that included Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine, and separated religion and state.
