Wessel Gansfort

Around 1419-89
Dutch humanist. Also known as Johannes Wessel. He studied at the municipal school in his native Groningen and at the school of the Confraternity of the Common Life in Zwolle, where he taught. After 1449, he studied at the universities of Cologne, Heidelberg, and Paris, earning degrees there, and mastered theology, philosophy, Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, and Arabic languages, as well as medicine. Due to his vast knowledge, he was called "Lux mundi, the light of the world," but because he shifted from idealism to nominalism in scholastic philosophy, his opponents also called him "Magister contradictionum."

オランダの人文主義者。ウェッセルJohannes Wesselともいう。生地フローニンゲンの市立学校，ズウォレの共同生活兄弟会の学校で学んだのち，そこで教える。1449年以後ケルン，ハイデルベルク，パリの諸大学に留学して学位を得，神学，哲学，ギリシア，ヘブライ，カルデア，アラビアの諸語，医学などをきわめた。その博識により〈世の光Lux mundi〉と呼ばれたが，スコラ哲学において実念論から唯名論的立場に移行したため，反対者から〈矛盾の博士Magister contradictionum〉とも呼ばれた。
