Around 1419-89 Dutch humanist. Also known as Johannes Wessel. He studied at the municipal school in his native Groningen and at the school of the Confraternity of the Common Life in Zwolle, where he taught. After 1449, he studied at the universities of Cologne, Heidelberg, and Paris, earning degrees there, and mastered theology, philosophy, Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, and Arabic languages, as well as medicine. Due to his vast knowledge, he was called "Lux mundi, the light of the world," but because he shifted from idealism to nominalism in scholastic philosophy, his opponents also called him "Magister contradictionum."
