A general term for mammals belonging to the Squamata family, Manidae, whose bodies are covered with horny scales. They feed primarily on ants and termites. They are also called lali (shark carp). They have a small head, a long, pointed snout, and short limbs. Because their bodies are covered with scales, they appear to be reptiles at first glance, but they have hair on their abdomens and the insides of their limbs. Three species are found in India, Nepal, Southeast Asia, China, and Taiwan, and four species in Africa. Their scales, which resemble those of a pine cone, are modified hair and are yellowish brown to dark brown in color. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
