1833‐98 British painter and decorator. Born in Birmingham, he entered Exeter College, Oxford, to become a priest, where he met his lifelong friend W. Morris. Heavily influenced by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites, he decided to become a painter in 1856. He admired Rossetti and initially adopted his style, but gradually he took on the models of Mantegna, Botticelli, and others, and created his own unique dreamlike world based on themes of myths and legends rooted in medieval romanticism.
