British painter and decorator. Born in Birmingham, he entered Exeter College, Oxford, to become a priest, where he met his lifelong friend W. Morris. Heavily influenced by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites, he decided to become a painter in 1856. He admired Rossetti and initially adopted his style, but gradually he took on the models of Mantegna, Botticelli, and others, and created his own unique dreamlike world based on themes of myths and legends rooted in medieval romanticism.

イギリスの画家，装飾家。バーミンガムに生まれ，聖職者になるためオックスフォードのエクセター･カレッジに入り，ここで生涯の友W.モリスに会う。ラスキンやラファエル前派に強い影響を受け，1856年画家への転向を決意。ロセッティに私淑し，初期には彼の画風をそのまま受け継ぐが，しだいにマンテーニャ，ボッティチェリ等を手本とし，また中世的なロマン主義に根ざした神話や伝説をテーマとして，夢幻的な独自の世界を築く。
