Music for ballet. Since ballet began at the French court in the late 16th century, much dance music has been composed, but theatrical elements were not incorporated until after J. Nover's reforms in the mid-18th century. After the center of ballet moved to Russia in the second half of the 19th century, Tchaikovsky and others began to compose excellent music for ballet, resulting in works such as "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping Beauty," and modern ballet music flourished. In the 20th century, with the success of S. Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, ballet music such as Stravinsky's "The Firebird," "Petrushka," and "The Rite of Spring" was produced.
