One story is about an old woman or nun who once tried to climb a sacred mountain, despite the ban on women, but incurred the wrath of the gods and was turned to stone, or turned back. On the slopes of famous mountains throughout Japan, there are often enshrines of old women and old women stones. For example, the twisted stone on Mount Koya in Kishu is said to be the mark of Kobo Daishi's mother, who was not allowed to cross the barrier and stomped her feet in resentment. …
