...Rice formation occurs when supercooled cloud particles collide with cold trees and other objects, freeze instantly, and form opaque white ice consisting of many ice particles, in the same way that hail is formed. Generally, the base of the ice is thin and fragile, fan-shaped, and it is sometimes called a "shrimp tail" due to its shape. It grows toward the wind, so the wind direction can be estimated from the way the ice forms.
