Wanxian Incident - Banken Incident
On September 5, 1926, British gunboats bombarded the city of Wanxian (now Wanzhou, a municipality under the direct control of Chongqing) in China. On August 29, troops under the command of Yang Sen, a Sichuan warlord, captured a British steamship at Yunyang on the upper Yangtze River, sailed it to Wanxian and detained it. Two other British steamships anchored in Wanxian were also detained that same day. The British side lodged a strong protest against Yang Sen and demanded the release of the British ship, but to no avail. On September 5, a rescue team was sent to rescue the crew from the British ship, and the British gunboats bombarded the city of Wanxian, burning dozens of houses and causing hundreds of civilian deaths and injuries. This incident significantly worsened anti-British sentiment among the Chinese people, sparking anti-British movements not only in various places along the Yangtze River, but also in Zhifu, Shanghai, Tianjin, Beijing, Fengtian, and other places. The United States and Japan adopted an attitude of non-intervention, and at the end of September, with American mediation, the British made concessions and the issue was resolved as a local issue.
