Character art - Mojie

Japanese:
Character art - Mojie

A pictorial representation using characters. The commonly seen "Henohenomoheji" is one such example. This is drawn using only characters, but sometimes characters are skillfully combined and heads, arms, legs, etc. are added to create a character picture.

In Japan, the Heian period paintings known as ashide-e (reed-drawings) can also be considered moji-e in a broad sense. They depict reeds growing on the water's edge, with plants, rocks, birds, and waka poems scattered throughout. Ashide-e was also called reed-drawing or scattered writing. In the Edo period, moji-e was popular as caricatures. According to the essay "Kyushoran" (1830) of the time, "In the Horeki era, among the children's pastimes, there were moji-e in which the shape of a warrior was drawn in words and the head, arms, and legs were drawn in pictures," which shows that moji-e was a source of entertainment for children. In the Edo period, there was also a type of moji-e called "moji-iri" (text-inlaying) in which characters were used in the design of the costume.

In Europe, decorative characters are also seen. There are two types: decorative characters that use picturesque characters, and characters that combine people and figures. The former can be seen on shirts and the like.
