Also called May Dolls. These are dolls displayed on the Boys' Festival, which is held on May 5th. There has long been a custom of displaying irises and other items on the Boys' Festival, but from the early Edo period onwards, people began to build shelves in front of their homes, set up spears, naginata, banners and other items on them and display large dolls. In the mid-Edo period, independent warrior dolls began to be displayed in places visible from the street, such as on verandas or in front of stores, and in the later period, small ones were displayed inside the home and became popular. Warrior dolls depict brave figures such as Kintoki, Shoki, Empress Jingu and Takeuchi Sukune, Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Kato Kiyomasa.
