An evergreen fern of the Polypodiaceae family. Its leaves grow sparsely from a thick, wiry rhizome. The leaves have long stalks and oblong blades, with pointed leaflets that are dark green in color. The edges are somewhat wavy. The midvein and lateral veins are clearly visible, but the reticulated veins are not. The sporangia are sparsely distributed in one or two rows on either side of the midvein. It is found in warm areas west of the Kanto region, growing within forests. The closely related Microsorium buergerianum is slightly smaller than Microsorium buergerianum, with sporangia scattered all over the underside. N. subhastata has long triangular leaf blades and irregularly scattered sporangia.
