It was an educational organization founded in 1906 by Hasunuma Monzo (1882-1980), a student at Tokyo Normal School. It praised the Emperor System, social cooperation, and thrift, and its slogan was "Sweat, discipline, love for one another." After World War I, it joined with the local youth movement through camping seminars and other events, and expanded its influence. It gained the patronage and support of financial figures such as Shibusawa Eiichi, the Youth Association movement's Tazawa Yoshiho, and the legal authority Hiranuma Kiichiro, and in the Showa period it became an external organization of both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education. It also established branches in public and private factories and mines, and devoted itself to educational work that advocated labor-management cooperation and to the total national spirit mobilization movement. By the time of Japan's defeat in the war, it was said to have 1,700 branches and 6.2 million members. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
