This marine fish (illustration) belongs to the family Scleractinidae in the order Perciformes, and is the most commonly seen fish in Japan. It reaches a total length of 30 cm. It is found in the East China Sea and south of central Honshu, where it inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of up to several tens of meters in shallow coastal areas. It has many local names throughout Japan, including Mushima, Obaba, Sakabishaku, Nushimajoro, Gin, Sakambo, and Kanko. In addition, because it has a pair of powerful spines on the back of its head, some regions refer to them as cow horns, and call them Ushi or Ushinbo. It also has upward-facing eyes at the tip of its cylindrical body, hence its English name, stargazer. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
