SiO 2 . Also called cristobalite. A type of silicate mineral. There are low-temperature α-cristobalite and high-temperature β-cristobalite. SiO 2 is liquid above 1723 °C, and β-cristobalite is stable between 1723 and 1470 °C. Below 1470 °C, it becomes tridymite, but it also exists as a metastable phase between 1470 and 265 °C. Below 265 °C, it transforms to α-cristobalite. α-cristobalite is a tetragonal crystal with lattice constants a 0 = 0.497, c 0 = 0.692 nm. Hardness 6-7. Density 2.33 g cm -3 . β-cristobalite is a cubic crystal with lattice constant a 0 = 0.709 nm. SiO2.
