The term refers to a group of American writers who emerged during World War I and established their fame in the 1920s. G. Stein coined the term in derision for young Americans who, disillusioned with postwar society, rebelling against established values, and feeling disconnected from tradition, abandoned their home countries to live in Paris and other places, indulging in rebellious hedonism. Their lives are succinctly depicted in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises (1926). Hemingway, FS Fitzgerald, Dos Passos, and E.E. Cummings are considered to be representative figures of this group.
