An Islamic kingdom that existed in the far western part of the Republic of Sudan in northeastern Africa from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Darfur was originally the name of a region, where there was already a small kingdom ruled by the Kayra dynasty of the Negroid Fur people, but in the mid-17th century the Fur converted to Islam. The king at that time was Suleiman Solon, and this led to the kingdom becoming powerful, controlling the surrounding Arab nomads as well. This kingdom is now known as the Kingdom of Darfur. Its territory spread particularly eastward, stretching across the Nile to the Atbara River. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
