A Buddhist book in 15 volumes. Written by Sengyou (445-518), a scholar-monk from the Qi and Liang dynasties of China. It is the oldest surviving (included in the 55th volume of the "Taisho Shinshu Daizōkyō") record of sutra translations (catalogs of Buddhist scriptures) made in China. It is a record of translations of sutras from the Later Han to the Liang dynasty, but also includes historical materials such as prefaces and postscripts to the sutras, as well as brief biographies of the translators. The main basis for this work is the sutra record (currently missing) by Doan (312-385). Attention is paid to mistranslations, missing translations, and questionable sutras, but the distinction between Mahāyāna and Hinayana has not yet been made clear. Also, because it was written by the Southern Dynasties, the Northern Dynasties are not covered. However, it is an important document that is indispensable for understanding the acceptance of Buddhism in ancient China.
